Dear Friends,

With the anticipation of reestablishing public worship, we must do so in a way that does not irresponsibly place the health of our people in grave danger. We are still learning a lot about the COVID-19 Coronavirus, we have seen its tragic force in the death of so many people. We pray for all those who have died these months as well as for those who mourn. We have also seen heroic efforts by those particularly in the health care field but so many others who in invisible ways have provided for our needs. We are all united in sincere gratitude for the work and the sacrifices of these people.

We also pray for and give thanks for those who have prudently guided us through these difficult times at the national, state, and local levels. In particular, we are grateful for the respect, which the state of Ohio has shown, for our religious rights and liberties. At no point have they disparaged our essential right and duty to worship Almighty God at the sacrifice of the Mass on Sunday and encounter the Risen Lord in the Eucharist. Rather, partnering with our brothers and sisters in the civil order, we prudently decided that though divine worship is an essential activity so also is the protection of the common good and the dignity of human life. The medical and public safety officials have been warning us urgently that gathered assemblies of persons was gravely dangerous to the individuals present and to the common good.

Submitted by cooladmin — Tue, 04/28/2020 - 8:07 PM — Last Updated: Fri, 05/01/2020 - 6:18 PM

The Bishops are sticking with "Social Distancing'' (see this article ) and they are hoping that the first scheduled Mass will be Pentecost, the Birthday of the Church.

In the mean time, we continue to pray for all those who have the Covid-19 disease and their families. Since so many people have asked, Father Coleman has agreed to do a live stream for us. We will post instructions here soon on how and when to get the stream.

Joanne Farrell, Our Adult Ed Director, is also going to live stream a Bible Study on Wednesday Mornings that everyone will be invited to. Details will be added here when available. Also, under the direction of our Music Director, Anne Grossman, the Praise Band will be practicing via an online Zoom meeting. If any one would like to join in, just email Anne at

Letter to the Faithful from Bishop Brennan

The Lord is Risen – Happy Easter!

The Ohio Bishops met yesterday.  After consultation and a close examination of the facts determined that while it is not yet possible to begin the public celebration of Mass, we are looking at a target date of May 30/31 – Pentecost Sunday hopefully to resume our celebrations.  Each of us continues to dispense all Catholics from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass and I also dispense from the canonical obligation of Easter Duty.  During his press conference yesterday, Governor DeWine indicated that through increased and widespread testing and other means, much knowledge will emerge to allow for safer conditions for the assemblies of people.  In the meantime we will begin the gradual process in various ways.

This week many of our priests will begin setting aside dedicated time for the Sacrament of Reconciliation on a wide basis by appointment and in places deemed to provide for safety and hygiene.  These locations will include spaces free of the need to touch surfaces such as doors or furniture, providing appropriate social distancing and privacy and limiting the number of people gathered at any one time to a bare minimum.  The locations and contact numbers for appointments will be posted on our Diocesan Website (https://columbuscatholic.org ) beginning Wednesday, April 29 so that appointments for confessions may be scheduled, and hearing confessions can begin Friday, May 1.  We will be working to make it possible in at least some of our churches for people to visit and pray during certain hours in the coming weeks.  Again, care for the continued health and safety of those who visit is paramount.

Message from the Bishop of Columbus

Submitted by cooladmin — Thu, 03/19/2020 - 8:45 PM — Last Updated: Thu, 03/19/2020 - 8:45 PM

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

I write to you again to speak about the many challenges we all face in light of the growing Coronavirus pandemic, which is so significantly impacting every facet of our daily lives.  As you already know, the bishops of Ohio earlier this week decided to suspend the public celebration of Mass in every diocese of the state, and dispensed to the faithful from their obligation to attend Mass at least through Easter Sunday.

I cannot begin to tell you how difficult and painful this decision was, especially during the Lenten season. But, after consultation with our Governor and s everal health and medical officials, and faced with the stark realities regarding the spread of this virus, it became apparent that this dramatic step was critical to making sure we are doing all we can to help curtail the spread of this virus and keep our communities healthy.  This extreme measure is a stark reminder of the necessity for all of us to heed the warnings of health and government officials to stay at home.

Coronavirus Update for the Faithful

Submitted by cooladmin — Sun, 03/15/2020 - 4:00 PM — Last Updated: Tue, 03/17/2020 - 5:05 PM

Updated 3/17/20:
Yesterday afternoon, the Bishops of Ohio issued additional guidance to the faithful. Their letter states: "the bishops of Ohio have decided, effective immediately, to suspend temporarily all publicly celebrated Masses/liturgies, at least through the celebrations of Holy Week and Easter. The bishops of Ohio dispense the Catholic faithful who reside in their respective dioceses and all other Catholics currently in Ohio from the obligation of attending Sunday Mass through Easter Sunday." In addition, all parish activities including PSR, Fish Frys, choirs, and lay ministries are canceled. The letter goes on to say: "Sunday remains a holy day, and we encourage the faithful to pray using the rich resources of our faith, including praying as a family or individually the rosary, divine mercy chaplet, the Liturgy of the Hours, stations of the cross, etc. We also urge you to participate in prayer by way of radio broadcast or televised or live-streamed Mass and make a spiritual communion." In a letter to the priests of the Diocese of Columbus, informing them of this decision, Bishop Brennan expressed deep sadness at the necessity of making this decision. He also indicated that Funerals and Weddings would be permitted, but would be restricted to the family only.  The Knights of Columbus Supreme Council has also canceled all business and in-person meetings nationwide until further notice.
